Το παρόν ερευνητικό εγχείρημα στο πλαίσιο των πολύτιμων και λίαν τιμητικών υποτροφιών του Ελληνικού Ιδρύματος Έρευνας & Καινοτομίας κεντρικό στόχο έχει να προετοιμάσει το έδαφος για την υλοποίηση εκτενούς σχολιασμένης έκδοσης του περίφημου τραγικού έργου του Σοφοκλέους υπό τον τίτλο "Οιδίπους επί Κολωνώ". Μέσα από την εκπόνηση λεπτομερούς Εισαγωγής, τη σύνταξη δόκιμης αγγλικής μετάφρασης του προσεκτικά επιμελημένου αρχαίου κειμένου και τη συγγραφή σχολίων αναφορικά με επιλεγμένα τμήματα του ως άνω δράματος (Πρόλογος & Πάροδος), ανοίγει επιτέλους ο δρόμος για την ολοκλήρωση μιας αναγκαίας συστηματικής και τεκμηριωμένης έκδοσης της εν λόγω σοφόκλειας τραγωδίας εξ αφορμής ειδικής πρόσκλησης του Liverpool University Press. Το σημαντικό βήμα έχει ήδη γίνει χάρη στο έγκριτο πρόγραμμα χρηματοδότησης του Ελληνικού Ιδρύματος Έρευνας και Καινοτομίας -- εν ευθέτω χρόνω και όταν ολοκληρωθεί σε όλες τις εκφάνσεις και τις πτυχές του το μνημειώδες αυτό πόνημα θα βρει τη θέση που του ταιριάζει στο πλαίσιο της έγκυρης σειράς Aris & Phillips Classical Texts. Τα ακλόνητα θεμέλια μιας τέτοιας έκδοσης τέθηκαν εδώ με αυτό το τόσο σημαντικό ερευνητικό πρόγραμμα!

The present research project, undertaken within the framework of the highly valuable and deeply prestigious fellowships of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation, has as its central aim to lay the groundwork for the publication of a comprehensive annotated edition of Sophocles’ renowned tragic play Oedipus at Colonus. Through the preparation of a detailed Introduction, the composition of a sound English translation of the carefully edited ancient text, and the writing of commentary on selected sections of the drama (Prologue and Parodos), this project finally paves the way for the completion of a much-needed, systematic, and well-documented edition of this Sophoclean tragedy—an endeavour prompted by a special invitation from Liverpool University Press.

This important step has already been made possible thanks to the distinguished funding programme of the Hellenic Foundation for Research and Innovation. In due course, once this monumental work has been brought to completion in all its dimensions and aspects, it will take its rightful place within the authoritative Aris & Phillips Classical Texts series. The unshakable foundations of such an edition have thus been laid here through this most significant research undertaking.
